The program sits in the system tray until a message arrives and can even be activated by a hotkey. A windowed display allows users to type messages in an editor box, while the auto-reply, ignore, and fast-reply (send predefined messages with the click of a button) features can save a great deal of time. LanTalk also has a dual-window screen, allowing users to view incoming messages as they write new ones. It has a find function to search through received messages for any text. Networking is all about communication right? Well then why are you still sending messages to your coworkers through that sometimes painfully slow email system? Conveying ideas shouldn't have to require a clunky way of sending messages. With that idea, network messaging was born. Granted the following program didn't pioneer it but it's easy enough to use that it won't matter either way.
LanTalk is one of the simpler network messaging programs available and very good replacement for Microsoft Winpopup. It's simple enough to install, however, you must have a copy of the program on each PC on your network but beyond that there is no more setting up to do. Once you've started up the program a simple one-pane window greets you. This is how you'll view the messages sent to you. If you so happen to want to send messages to other people on the network, simply hit the compose icon. It' then expands to a 3-pane program with received text, an area for you to key in your message and a listing of all the networked machines visible to you. If you happen to want to send messages to specific machines or all machines you simply check off where you want your message to go, perfect for letting everyone know what's going on.
LanTalk is, as we said, one of the easier LAN messaging programs available. Beyond its simplicity are its generous configuration options, which even include some customization options in case you don't enjoy the default orange program background. Its auto reply options are useful as it can serve to confuse your coworkers, not that you would want to ;). A definite must for those that want to communicate across the office using a less cumbersome method.

LanTalk XP is a useful utility that will add value to any business or home network by making Windows Messaging more accessible and infinitely better looking. Windows XP users will especially appreciate the colourful, customizable interface, and other Windows users will benefit from the XP look on their desktops. It may be a bit presumptuous to think business users will never send legitimate file attachments, and adding this feature will make LanTalk XP, in my book, a serious e-mail alternative. Until then, I give LanTalk XP four out of five Go Inside Review Lights.
